The legendary sender of e-Chug and smoking cessation e-mails said he is leaving the University and "returning to the trenches" to help those in need.
Chuck Roper, a veteran of University Health Services, left his position last Friday as health education coordinator after nearly seven years at UT. He said he plans to help former drug-and alcohol-addicted single mothers in Travis County as part of a five-year, $500,000 federal grant.
While at the University, Roper became well-known for his campus-wide e-mails offering free smoking cessation classes, and he also established a number of other programs, including the Center for Students in Recovery program, with coordinator Laura Jones-Sawnn, and e-Chug, a mandatory alcohol awareness program for freshmen.
"I think the Peer Education program is my favorite," Roper said of the health and lifestyle education program.
