Queens Needs a Campaign to Quit!

Skip Legault is the poster boy for the state's new anti-smoking campaign. The problem is the 48-year-old is still smoking; they chose him to try to underscore the risks with nicotine addiction. Here is a man who has suffered heart attacks, a stroke and the loss of a leg. And he admits it is all due to smoking.Well, I smoked for about 30 years and do know how hard it is to stop smoking. But I did quit, for I wanted to live, and have not smoked in about ten years. I really feel for Skip but I also think if there is a will there is a way. There are programs, medications, tapes and support groups that can help.Many years ago I worked for a company called Volkert Stampings in Queens Village and they had a sign in the factory that read, "Quitters never win and winners never quit." Well I have a different slogan for smoking and it goes like this: "Be a true quitter: stop smoking and be a winner."Furthermore, I think it would be a great idea if we had a major campaign here in Queens to try to get all, if not most, of our residents to stop smoking and be an example to the rest of the city and the nation.
