Smoking will be prohibited within 25 feet of university buildings, according to a policy announced last week. The new restrictions are in response to a state law that took effect last summer allowing university campuses to prohibit smoking within 100 feet of any campus building.
Another law approved at that time banned smoking in all state buildings including universities as of Jan. 1. The law included an exception for designated smoking spaces in residence halls, which will go smoke-free at the start of the 2008-09 school year.
Since the beginning of this school year, UNCC administrators have been taking input from staff, faculty and student organizations on whether to restrict outdoor smoking, said David Dunn, vice chancellor for university relations and community affairs.
