Doctor who helped establish Berkeley Free Clinic dies at 90

He got health department employees to run up and down the stairs for exercise and always pressed people to quit smoking, urging them to give up their "coffin nails," his daughter said.

"He was always interested in helping people to achieve and maintain good health," Cathy Leonard said. "And he absolutely practiced what he preached."

His other daughter, Barbara Leonard of Levallois-Perret, France, agreed that her father practiced the health ideals he spread to others. She said her father jogged in the Berkeley hills at 6:30 a.m. through his 90th year.

"Five days a week," Cathy Leonard added. "He took off weekends. He started off going for 3, 4 or 5 miles and later it was a couple of miles."

Dr. Leonard's accomplishments ranged from documenting.
