Pregnant women urged to quit smoking on World Cancer Day

Tasmania's Cancer Council has used World Cancer Day to renew calls for pregnant women to stop smoking.

The Council's Chief Executive Officer, Lawson Ride, says Tasmania has one of the highest number of birth defects and underweight babies due to smoking.

He says parents who smoke at home and in the car are also causing damage to their children's health.

"The impact on children is quite substantial and people underestimate if you're out shopping and you walk past someone and they're smoking with a baby in a pram, that is doing their child some damage," he said.

"It's a matter I suppose of weighing up the smokers rights and the rights of children, today we're focusing on the rights of children."
