Wisconsin Smokers Getting Help to Kick the Habit

The start of the New Year and an increase in Wisconsin's cigarette tax seems to have inspired many to quit smoking. The Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line has received nearly 20,000 calls in January alone. To put that number into perspective, the Quit Line served just 8,000 people in all of 2007.

Gundersen Lutheran health officials say it's a pleasant but unexpected surprise. "I think it shows that Wisconsin smokers are wanting to quit. They're looking for resources and the Quit Line is a great way to get some resources," says Susan Lundsten, Gundersen Lutheran Wellness Specialist.

Governor Jim Doyle has been pushing for a statewide ban for all work places, restaurants, and taverns to take effect everywhere as soon as possible. But, lawmakers say the state's tavern league has been pushing for a phase-in. So far, an agreement hasn't been reached.
