More than 164,000 people have stopped smoking since the smoke bans came into force in England and Wales. Wales went smoke free on April 2 and England followed on July 1. 329,800 smokers set a date to quit, a 29% rise on last year, and 165,711 were still not smoking four weeks later. The NHS Stop Smoking Service spent 26.7m pounds for the period compared to 23.4m for the same time last year. 10 facts about smoking in Wales: It is estimated that 6,000 people die from smoking each year. Smoking is thought to account for 8 in 10 deaths from lung cancer; 3 in 4 deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and 1 in 5 deaths from heart disease. It is estimated that, on average, smokers die about 10 years younger than non-smokers. 25 per cent of adults in Wales smoke, 27 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women.
